Four Ways to Practice Self-Gratitude

We all know that gratitude is essential to a sense of peace, happiness and fulfillment. However, we often forget that self-gratitude is an important aspect of this bigger picture. We can become so involved with helping others and being of service to others, that we forget to bring that charitable focus onto ourselves and treat ourselves with the kindness and gentleness that we deserve.

With that in mind, here are six easy ways to begin being grateful for the miracle that you truly are:

  1. Stop Negative Self-Talk – We all have that little voice in our head that, at times, can be our worst enemy. When you find yourself thinking and speaking negatively about yourself, stop immediately and turn that thought or statement into something positive.
  2. Learn to Accept Compliments – Deflecting compliments is a way of reinforcing the idea that you don’t deserve them. The truth is that if someone compliments you, they see your worth. When you graciously accept that compliment you tacitly acknowledge that you see your worth as well.
  3. Begin to See Yourself Positively – When you look in a mirror, instead of seeing flaws, begin to make an effort to see all of your strengths. Many of fall deeply into the habit of self-depreciation or even loathing. Breaking this negative habit allows you to begin to see yourself as you really are and that, in turn, allows you to be grateful for who you really are.
  4. Write Down Ten Things That You’ve Accomplished – We can get so caught up in the habit of viewing ourselves negatively that we concentrate only on perceived failures and ignore the obvious successes. Turn the tide on this behavior by writing down ten things that you’ve accomplished. It can be this week, this month, this year or over the course of your entire life. When you’re done put you list someplace where you can see it everyday and let it remind you that you have more to be grateful for than your actually realize.
